Mao's View of Tiananmen Square

This is a continuation of my RTW diary from November 2003.

Hanging on the wall of the Forbidden City overlooking Tian'anmen Square is a portrait of Chairman Mao. If he could see, out of the corner of his right eye he would have seen the back of my head as I squinted into the bright November sunshine.

Out of the corner of his left eye, he would probably be squinting himself... as the bright November sunshine glistened on the bonnets of the cars in the Porsche Dealership, shining the way to China's capitalist future. I could have taken a picture of me sucking on a Starbucks bought from within the Forbidden City itself, but this seems to represent the end of the cold war even more certainly.
