Secular Singapore and the Merlion

This is a continuation of my RTW diary from November 2003.

On my second and longer visit to Singapore I took in a broader range of sights such as they are. The Botanical Gardens were very lush. The Merlion wasn't as disappointing as the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

Anyway… I was chatting to the taxi driver in from the airport and he told me that last month everyone in Singapore had celebrated Hindi Diwali, this week they’re getting ready for Islamic Eid, next month is Christian Christmas and in January it’s a big party for Chinese Lunar New Year! Talk about a secular society.

For a rather bland city founded on commercial success, they do take good care of their spiritual side.
