Eurovision 2010 First Impressions #5

Here are my first impressions on this year's competitors in the Eurovision Song Contest. These songs are the five which automatically qualify for the Final on Saturday 29th May. The numbers to the left represent their draw in the running order on the night of the Final.

2. Spain 4/100
What is it about the Art Garfunkel look this year? First Denmark and now Spain. No country has ever won singing from second. For some reason, even when Spain enters a great track Europe does not vote for them. This is not even a great track. Last place beckons.

3. Norway 43/100
One of the favourites to win apparently. Again, I do not see what the bookies do. Norway would certainly love to win again for reasons of national pride. Sweden has won four times compared to Norway's three victories. Norway has also come away with 'nul points' on four occasions too. I am not sure this Webberesque tune can pull it off though, and certainly not when he sings third out of 25 songs.

12. United Kingdom 27/100
I am unable to view the UK entry dispassionately... Until this year. The BBC refuses to comment on how many complaints they received in the light of their disastrous selection show. A message of discontent has clearly been registered because Peter Waterman and Mike Stock are promising a complete re-write of this weak weak entry. While Josh can clearly sing, he has been given a poisoned chalice of a song to cope with.

18. France 12/100
French Football authorities have chosen this song as their anthem for the World Cup in South Africa. It may well take off on the terraces if the French Football team can be persuaded to score some goals. Just as 'We're on our way to Wembley' wouldn't make a great Eurovision song, this is an ill judged entry.

22. Germany 86/100
The bookies have installed this as third favourite. I do not know why. Quirky, lyrically and in terms of the singers voice, this is a song which will stand out, but not necessarily one which will see a continent reaching for their telephones.
