Did you know... An irregular series to help you do better in pub quizes.
- The Sydney Opera House is built on 120 pillars.
- It is not just an opera house, but an entertainment centre with 6 performance spaces for hire in, in small, medium and large sizes.
- Opera is performed in the medium sized performance hall for only 3 months of the year. All the other venues are open to be booked by any performer.
- Booking the Main Concert Hall costs A$15,000 for a day.
- It is all made out of poured concrete.
- Building work began before anyone knew how to engineer the roof. It was finally made out of prefabricated concrete blocks which were slotted into place.
- There are 1,056,000 roof tiles on the roof.
- The roof tiles were made in Sweden.
- The Utson design was originally discarded and was saved by the Finnish delegate on the international design approval committee, who had arrived late.
- It should have been made in 3 years for a cost of A$7m.
- It was completed after 16 years and at a cost of A$110m!
- J¢rn Utson the architect was fired half way through the project and never saw it completed.
- Utson and his son and grandson (both architects) were hired to plan the renovations of the interior, which are ongoing to this day... though the opera House has just run out of money to complete them!
- I have just been on a tour of the Sydney Opera House.
