Kiribati.
Pronounced Kiribass.
It is an interesting country to visit in this time of Global Warming and concern about rising sea levels.
Why?
Because in this picture you can see both the North Coast and the South Coast of the capital island, Bairiki. Go on. Peer through the trees... That is the lagoon at high tide.
Yes that's right... It is literally 10metres across. And I was standing here on the country's highest point. 2 metres above sea level.
As you leave you receive a hand written letter from the Foreign Secretary thanking you for visiting and asking you to raise the profile of the country overseas and encourage other visitors. I have to say the people are friendly, though they didn't really know what to make of me as a tourist as opposed to a UN staffer.
