The Ancient Capital Of Armenia

We drove on from Echimiadzin to the border with Turkey.

Just by the no mans land we were led up a hill. This provided wonderful views of Mt Ararat and the fertile plain that lay all around. To the East were the mountains that separated Armenia from Azerbaijan. It was a beautiful spot.

Once we had drunk in the splendour of our surroundings Marina, our tour leader drew our attention to the ground around us.

We were standing in the middle of the ancient capital of Armenia, back from the time in the 5th Century when Armenia stretched half way across modern Turkey and even had a foothold on the Mediteranean coast. The hills we had climbed over were perhaps mounds instead, full of archeological riches.

And when you started to look closely at the ground suddenly all you could see was broken pottery. Fragments of bowls, whole handles of ewers and amphorae. All laying there, waiting for an archaeologist to come and unveil their secrets.
