The Carpet Museum

What do they all do?

As we wandered into Room 21 in the Carpet Museum of Azerbaijan (and yes, it reaslly is housed in this building!) a question came to mind.

What are all these people DOing?

Each room had two people in it. All accredited with security badges. All looking slightly peeved that their afternoon nap was being interrupted. None of them offering any sort of engagement with us at all.

And as we were the only people we had seen in the Museum you might have thought they'd try to offer us their opinion of Karabakh weaving technique if only to break up their day.

And everywhere we went was like this. Lots and lots of people totally underemployed by the expectations of their role, yet paid to stand around making places look busy.

Azerbaijan seems to have lots of oil wealth, but perhaps not much in the way of entrepreneurialism, services or creative employment thinking.
