The Cruel Sea

There are some sights which need to be seen as soon as possible before they disappear. And I do not mean Leprechauns.

Dunbeg Fort just outside Dingle is a case in point.

Dunbeg is an Iron Age Circle Fort built right against the coast. It is on a promontory of land that is surrounded by the sea on three sides. A view of the steep drop to the sea rewards anyone who gets close enough to the fence.

On the fourth side of the fort, the side connecting the promontory to the land, there are several lines of defensive walls to protect the castle from invaders.

As the years and the winds and the seas have eroded the coast, the greatest danger to Dunbeg doe not now lie from the land at all. Something like 55% of the land around the South Western side of the Fort has fallen away in the last 40 years, and on that rate of erosion the fort will not be safe to visit for much longer.
