While the Caucusus had been a fantastically interesting place to visit it had to be admitted that it was not really set up for mass tourism or back packing travellers.
Accommodation in Baku is definitely aiming itself at the oil executive end of the business market. This drags up the prices of all accommodation as nice 3 star hotels are able to price themselves as 4star plus venues because often it is the oil companies that are picking up the tab.
Tbilisi just doesn’t have a lot of accommodation. Our place in Tbilisi was even nicer than the one in Baku but the street it was on was half dug up and on a back street in the Old Town. All the ‘front streets’ were dug up and the buildings covered in scaffolding.
So it was great to come across a brilliantly professionally run hostel in Yerevan.
The Envoy Hostel was a well run clean place with free internet and breakfast and really welcoming and friendly people on the front desk. They have also recently set up a tour company which offers day excursions around different Armenian sites. Looking at the itineraries it was clear that they offered far more than we could possibly organise for ourselves in a day using public transport, so we signed up to a couple. And subsequently enjoyed the best few days of our time in the Caucusus.
