The French left their mark on Damascus.
In 1920 the French ended the brief Post-Ottoman spell of independence for Syria. In taking Damascus, the French air force strafed the Hamideyah Souq. The bullet holes have never been repaired. The roof never replaced.
Look carefully and you can see the holes... Standing at the end of the souq, the effect was quite mesmerising.
