Fun Finding The Funicular Part 2

After the 40 degree heat of Baku the drizzle was very welcome!

On our second day we went for a long walk up to the castle and then back down around the back of the Old Town.

Walking along the Southern ridge we had spied the Botanical Gardens to our left and to the right we could see the rest of the city. To the West side of Tbilisi we could see the TV Tower and the National Memorial, pictured. We could see from our guidebook that they could be reached by funicular. You can even see the point where the funicular widens for passing in this shot too! We made this the goal of our walk.

Finding the station proved to be easier than in Baku, though the walk was a long one and strenuous in places as it involved walking up and down many hilly streets.

Tbilisi is a pretty city. A little shabby in places, but charming and welcoming for those prepared to stroll a little of the main track.

As I have said before though Tbilisi is renovating, and the funicular proved to be no exception. Oh how the security guards laughed as we asked where to buy a ticket. Their levity gave me a chance to look through the gate to see that the funicular had no tracks and no train.

Just the old route and a new ticket office.

When I tried to ask if it was possible to walk up to the National Memorial I thought the security guard was going to suffocate from laughing. When he calmed down he pointed us in the way of a taxi.
