“I think we turn left here”.
When I say 'I think' I mean 'We do'.
“The funicular is shown as being 50m off the map, and we are just off the map, but not 50metres so I think its further along to the left. Yes. Left.”
Of course the funicular was about 10 metres to the right of where we were standing, but around a corner. Neither of us thought to look up to see the funicular clearly carving it’s way up the hill to the Avenue of Martyrs.
So we turned left.
As we moved into the 15th minute of our walk and could see the pavement petering out as the road became a 6 lane motorway we became convinced we’d walked more than the 50m indicated by the map.
Five of those minutes had been spent walking along a single file dirt track by the side of the road; five minutes had been spent negotiating a car park. I’d set off a car alarm in the car park and we’d been heartily stared at by locals for setting off a car alarm and turning down offers of a taxi… A move deemed to be deeply suspicious judging from the reaction.
So 15 minutes retracing our steps and we decided to call it a day and go straight back to our hotel for a shower before dinner. And 30 seconds later we turned a corner and found the funicular!
So we sat our sweaty selves down on the heavily upholstered seats, had some water and got ready for our ascent up the hill.
