Khor Virap and The Pit

How would you cope in a pit with snakes and scorpions?

For 10 years?

Without food?

Well somehow St Gregory The Illuminator managed exactly that. Marina speculated that perhaps there had been fewer scorpions and perhaps more food than the legends suggest.

But it was the case that the pit under Khor Virap was used as a cell for Gregory.

Climbing down the ladder I can say that it is very deep and dark.

At the bottom of the pit was a family. The children of who were in their very early twenties I would say. As I stepped off the bottom rung I was asked if I was Armenian. They were Canadian I guessed.

“No. I’m from London. I’m British”.
“Yes. We’re Canadian. But are you Armenian?”
“No. Just British”.
“Oh.” And they turned their back on me!
