Straight Street

The Old Town of Damascus is cut in two by the Street Called Straight.

Running from the East to West gates, it passes by the point where St Paul arrived in Damascus. It passes the Ummayad Mosque, the third most important shrine in Islam and burial site of John The Baptist. The street runs through a Roman Arch and through the heart of the souq. A souq whose roof is riven with bullet holes having been strafed by the French airforce during their invasion.

To walk along Straight Street is to encompass in a few hours a foretaste of the breadth and range of Damascene and Syrian history.

But as you can see, even on straight street, some things are crooked!
