Tbilisi Botanical Gardens

A stroll in the Botanical Gardens sounded lovely

Tbilisi is spread over several gorges and mountains around the River Mehteki. One of these gorges, right in the middle of the city has been given over to a Botanical Garden. It looked enticing as we walked above it so that afternoon we found our way to the entrance.

Given the mania gripping Tbilisi for rebuilding at the moment getting to the gate was something of a trial. The entire street that leads up to the entrance was being dug up and half the houses being refurbished. The scene was one of piles of stone, stacks of piping and timber being sliced and diced i the open. No-one looked the least bit perturbed as we clambered through.

The gardens were worth the effort though. Beautifully laid out with a waterfall at one end, they take full advantage of the steep slopes on either side of the gorge which encloses them. There are hidden paths and bridges leading off in all directions. It was a pleasantly quiet experience.

The park was pretty quiet. The only other people there seemed to be couples out for a stroll too. I found out some were there for more than courting. As I walked up one set of steps I was greeted at the top of them by the sight of a man with his back to me jumping up and pulling his trousers up over his exposed backside. He and his girlfriend has made their way off the path for a little lie down it seemed.
