Viva Las Vegas!

Tbilisi is a work in progress.

Arriving into Tbilisi railway station the platforms are potholed and the stairs to take you to the main building of the station are broken edged dark and dank.

The building at the front of the station though is brand new. A vision of escalators, marble and steel with shops and a huge ‘travel centre’ in place of a ticket office.

Across Tbilisi you seem the same contrast time and again. New buildings going up alongside derelict Soviet concrete blocks. Wooden buildings in the Old City being refaced with new timber.

The ultimate in gaudy Georgian renovation is the Presidential Palace. Faced in gold and glass and adorned with something designed to look like the Dome on The Reichstag, the Palace stands on one of the highest points overlooking Tbilisi.

Whether it would be more at home on The Strip, I will leave for you to decide.
