A walk down Straight Street is a fun affair.
Hopping on and off the narrow pavement; weaving around the bollards scattered at knee-crippling height; dodging the mopeds laden down with goods. All fun.
But the traffic is not too much of a problem. The cars all go in one direction and they all go that way in single file.
Damascus does not just have an old town however. It also has a New Town. A very big New Town which also needs exploring.
And here the traffic is less accommodating. Less accommodating of pedestrians, and of other traffic. Crammed in like the proverbial sardines in a tin, the choking haze of fumes of the exhausts as you navigate the streets is a sharp contrast to the waves of spices you experience as you walk through the souq.
