Plastic Platitudes From America's Armpit

The biggest negative for me about LA has been the Los Angelenos that I have come across.

It may not be a surprise to anyone that Californians are superficial in their approach to people. However I really wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming scale of plastic attitude that has done the opposite of greet my arrival.

The grins are more fixed than a wrestling match and the eyes waxier than the annual production of a Candle factory. Los Angeles is a city that is clearly mixing its Ritalin with its Prozac and the result is a city of people drifting through a world of polite fixed-response conversations entirely devoid of anything approaching an emotion.

I think that the people in LA contrast particularly badly with the genuine warmth and interest that people have for you in New Zealand.

LAers just don’t care about what you have been doing, why you are in their city. Engaging in the most basic conversation with you under any circumstances is clearly an unwarranted strain. They are generally very unfriendly and I find the constant grinning that goes with their indifference neither inane nor welcoming, just plain disturbing. They should rename the city Stepford.
