Walking from Europe to America

Iceland has always had an ambivalent relationship with the European Union.

Not just because of fish stocks and cod wars. Deep down, Iceland asserts that it is not necessarilly a European or a North American country, but a country of somewhere else. Of somewhere new.

This picture is of a stream in the Thingvellir National Park. It runs along the boundary of the Eurasian and North American plate. Along this spot new Earth is formed as these plates pull apart, and Iceland is made of this stuff. The stuff from under the Earth's crust, stuff which makes them from somewhere inbetween.

The great thing about visting the park is it is the only spot along the plates boundaries where you can cross from one to another. You can walk from Europe to America. All in Iceland.

  1. Here's the real question... if they declared themselves not Europe and not America, would either of us miss them?
