I found Los Angeles to be sprawling, but interesting, and I still hadn’t made it out to Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu, Downtown and a string of other places I fancied visiting.
You could easily spend a week in the city and it is made much easier if you have a car, although the traffic can clog up badly. In terms of getting around otherwise, the taxis are expensive because of the distances between attractions.
As for buses: well the bus network is as confusing and inaccessible to a stranger as that of any big city. What LA really needs is a serious Underground Metro network. The city does have three lines as a vague attempt at public transport, but it is the largest city in terms of geographical area in the whole world, and three lines does not an integrated transport solution make!
You could leave the city with the impression that LA is like a much much larger version of the concrete hell that is Milton Keynes.
