The Blasket Islands are Ireland’s most westerly.
They were evacuated in 1953 when the government and locals agreed that life in such isolated circumstances and extreme weather wasn’t feasible.
The Blasket Centre at Dunquin is one of the best museums that I have ever visited. It shows that any material can be made relevant and interesting if enough thought goes into the presentation of the available material.
As you enter the museum building you walk down a long white corridor with a glass wall at the far end. The window offers a view over the Blaskets. To left and right are rooms focussing on different aspects of island life and the lives of Blasketers the World over. On the walls are drawings and pen portraits of the residents.
It is wonderfully informative and interactive and engages you from the moment you walk in.
These two images are of art from the museum. The found the sheep fascinating. On the day that I visited, the sculpture said it all as far as the weather was concerned. I doubt there are many days when she gets to look out of place!
