Eurovision and the Caucusus

And what better way to lift my spirits?

As I descended on one of the longest escalators I’ve ever seen into the Baku Metro, what could I hear on the PA system?

Could it be? Would they really do that? Yes it was.

Certainly and absolutely it was Safura singing ‘Drip Drop’.

My first instinct was to look for her busking. Her 8th place in Oslo had been a disappointing return on the $3,000,000 dollar investment that the state broadcaster put into her dance routine. You remember. The one that was produced by Beyonce’s choreographer and that made her look like a jogging Tyrannosaurus Rex.

But no, she was being broadcast through the PA of the Metro and her song was an omni-present backdrop soundtrack to our travels around Baku.

Everything about Azerbaijan’s involvement in Eurovision screams of their determination to be the first country in the Caucusus to win the Grand Prix.
