Gay Cork

It can be interesting to sample ‘the scene’ wherever you are.

There are few places in the World like Soho. Each ‘gay capital’ tends to be gay with a capital G in different ways. The Castro in San Francisco is one very concentrated ghetto of streets. Berlin has 600 gay owned and operated businesses scattered liberally across the city in every neighbourhood.

So what would the ‘Gay Capital of the South of Ireland’ be like?

Well the ‘gay friendly’ vegan café overlooking Sullivan’s Quay and Grand Parade offered fantastic food and welcoming service.

The two gay bars I’m afraid I can’t comment on as both were closed when we went to get in at 8pm on a Friday night. With no opening hours on the doors or windows, we couldn’t work out if they were opening later or not so we called it a night and headed home!

The gay B&B we were staying in was lovely. With views over the docks and the river the Georgian Townhouse was done out in period furnishings. The breakfast offered was wonderful.

An unexpected surprise over breakfast was an opportunity to meet members of the Cork Garda. One of the other guests had waited until the bars had opened and had gone out and pulled a local… But the fellow he brought back to the B&B had robbed him of his phone, wallet and laptop.

  1. Yeah that happened to a guy I went on a pub crawl tour with (I was younger and stupider then) in Dublin. He got mugged. I mean we were rushing around on a pub race with foreign accents and he let himself get separated from the pack. Might as well tattoo "mug me" on your forehead. Still, I felt sorry for him, poor thing.
